1. We had the perfect start at West Hill to our 19th season. The weather was superb for mid February, the course was in tremendous shape (especially considering the very poor weather earlier in the month) and the food was imaginative and plentiful. Happiness!
2. The new season also started very brightly for Graham as he carded a 37 pointer to keep him one ahead of Kevin, Jon and Richard. This was Graham’s 8th day event victory which now puts him two wins ahead of Chris, Peter R and Peter L. It also takes him to the top of the Order of Merit table which until West Hill he had shared with Steve Walters. Well done Graham and I note that Ian has squeezed your handicap down to 6.
3. Graham (for once) had not qualified for the Captain’s Bowl so Kevin was able to win a very attractive consolation prize in scoring a net 69 off his (now historic) handicap of 24. This brought him in 3 shots ahead of new Capt. Ian. Well done to Kevin who will defend his trophy against Ian and the other qualifiers at West Sussex next February.
4. At the AGM which followed the prizegiving, Ian and Jon were voted in as Captain and VC for the new season and we look forward to many hilarious moments both at day events and on tour. I outlined the venue choices for 2013 and described aspects of the proposed North Devon Tour in September of that year. All dates have now been issued to members and are already on the web site.
5. Talking of which Ian gave an interesting presentation at the AGM of how the new design of the web site will look. We are indeed fortunate to have had two professionals involved in this exciting new medium and thank both Ian and before him Steve for the work they have done. It will now be possible to access even the Order of Merit which will be updated after each event.
6. All the trophies from the 2011 season were presented at the AGM and the only one which has been decided since the post Effingham newsletter was the Pairs KO in which Mike and Nigel retained their trophy by beating Steve L and John H.
7. We’ve been delighted with the response to our Annual Dinner in January. There were 84 there on the night and everyone seemed impressed that the restaurant could serve such an attractive and delicious choice of dishes to so many people in such an efficient way. We shall be booking the equivalent date of Friday 25th January next year at the same venue.
8. The invitations for the KO 2013 competitions will go out soon so do organise your partners for the Pairs and enter the other two if appropriate. Roger and John will be running them as usual.
9. Our bookings for the new season are very heavy but we’ll always try to accommodate you and a guest if you have one. We’d still like a few more people for Puttenham in April as that would take us to a more advantageous discount structure which would put some more money into our coffers and enable us to increase the subsidy on the more expensive events.
10. Chris is hard at work as always on the Charity event. He has had some triumphs (and a few disappointments) from the many Clubs he’s approached for 4 balls and some of these will be be made available in the usual way at a bargain £100 per four ball with the allocation being drawn at Puttenham in April. Watch out for the letter on this subject. We’re building up some exciting auction items apart from the prestige rounds and thank those who have helped us so far. As already requested, do consider whether you or a contact of yours can help us. Every little helps……
11. Ian is no doubt practising hard for his drive in at Cuddington where there will a good crowd supporting him. Terry T will commit the occasion to posterity with his digital and the other Ian will no doubt have the photographs on the web site even before we eat! Should be a great day….
Have a good season’s golf.
