  1. There cannot be many courses in as attractive a setting as Cowdray Park. The views were absolutely spectacular in the gorgeous spring like weather and it seemed that every hole offered a new vista which was as good or better than the previous. The holes were challenging and the greens full of bumps and borrows. BAGS has not played there before and most of those there last week were in the same position so with a number of blind shots also to cope with, scoring well was going to be difficult.
  2. All of which makes Alan Langford’s round of 41 points a wonderful achievement. Most BAGS events these days are won with 36-39 points so to reach that total off 14 was superb. This was Alan’s fourth win in BAGS events and as two of those have come in the last two Charity events, he must be looking forward to making it a hat trick in June. This was his 86th BAGS round and the first time he has scored over 40 points in one of them so well done Alan. As a result his handicap has now been reduced to 12.5 so nearly (but not quite) two shots.
  3. Three points behind were Glenn and new member Lawrie Arnold. Glenn of course was in his own neck of the woods being a member of nearby Goodwood so took advantage of his (for once) comparatively short journey to a BAGS event to notch his first podium place since 2012. He also had the consolation of winning the 150 round trophy since Alan was not eligible. Lawrie is fast building a reputation for consistency and has been accumulating a number of Novelty prizes having won one at the last four events in succession.
  4. Alan’s score takes him to 100 points in the Chairman’s and though he will no doubt increase that score soon enough as he gets rid of the 26 he made at the Berkshire, in the Memorial he is stuck with it but then everyone is allowed an occasional poor round! The other contenders however have also moved on and it is Steve Bond (31 at CP) who leads at this stage by only a point from Richard Hockham and two from Lawrie with the ever improving Mark Longhurst also on 102. Interesting battles lie ahead!
  5. Despite the change of date numbers are looking good for West Surrey with 60 or so signed up but then this is one of the most scenic courses in Surrey Please make your payments as soon as possible then I can think in terms of issuing the OOP
  6. The Charity event preparation continues to take up much of our time and thanks to Hedley and Jon for getting more tenners into the draw for the £1500 Mappin & Webb watch. We are now well advanced with the programme production and have had confirmation from all the teams that they will be with us again so it’s 116 players planning to do battle over the Betchworth Park course. We have also lined up some great Auction items and there’s an excellent dinner menu after your golf. We’ve also got some stunning prizes if you are skilful enough to get a hole in one at any of the par 3s. If you haven’t already paid for this event please do so then we can concentrate on even more important matters. Hedley has agreed a project with the Marsden that we will be fund raising for and all those details and lots of others will be in the event programme which you will get in early June. The £100 fourball vouchers have now been distributed and we hope you enjoy playing at the courses drawn for you.
  7. The slightly delayed Cornwall Tour details for next year will be issued in the next 24 hours. If you wish to join us please let me have your preferred accommodation and travel choices so we can make provisional plans. This year’s Kent Tour is fully subscribed with a record 40 players. That’s no doubt down to a combination of a short journey down there and wonderful courses, the quality of which is second to none.
  8. The KO matches have started to be played and please look carefully at your own deadline dates some of which are now only just over three weeks away. John and Roger do not want to evict anyone from the Competition but it is only fair to all the other entrants that the time schedules are maintained. Just a reminder also that the Pairs matches are to be played on the basis of 90% of the difference in handicaps as this figure was changed last year.
  9. It has been a very dry spell over the last few weeks and I know greenkeeping staff are looking for a bit of help (but not too much!) from Mother Nature to redress the balance. The temperatures are due to be lower too but hopefully that will soon pass as we move into May and a really busy period in the BAGS season.

Play plenty of golf to keep the election on the back burner!
