1. It’s always a pleasure to go to the seaside in fine weather and I’m relieved to say this was the case when we played our 27 hole competition at Littlehampton last week. There had been lots of rain over the preceding 24 hours but this obligingly stopped just before our first groups teed off in the morning and we had a dry, relatively sunny day with little wind so the scene was set for some high scores.

2. Many of the 58 players duly obliged with 44 scoring thirty or over. Some fIlled their boots even more, chief amongst them being Alan Langford who scored a whopping 44 points in his morning eighteen, the highest BAGS score since Gordon finished with the same figure at Surrey Downs in May 2014. This was Alan’s second victory this season – he won at Cowdray Park in April with 41 points – and his fifth overall since he joined us in 2010. He also kept it going in the afternoon 9 adding another 17 to his total to end up with 61 points. That’s great play off a handicap of 13 and Ian was impressed enough to move Alan down by two shots to 10.6 which is quite a movement at that level. Still one feels his play is consistent enough to cope with the new figure though when Alan works out the betting odds for the Kent Tour, it will be interesting to see how he rates his chances of landing the Secretary’s Cup. Well done Alan on a superb display which gave you another thoroughly deserved victory by four points over the 27 holes.

3. This performance has catapulted Alan to the top of the Chairman’s which he now leads by seven points from Richard Hockham and Steve Bond. His current score of 118 points is normally enough to win that trophy but there may still be more to come as his throwaway score (ie his current third best) is a mere 33 points. He won this trophy last year with 109 so it shows just how far he has progressed in the last two years.

4. None of this of course detracts from the continuing consistent performances of Richard whose 38 points over the 18 holes at Littlehampton, has tightened his grip on both Treasurer’s and Memorial Trophies. In fact he leads the Memorial by a huge 13 points which, as long as he plays in the remaining four counting rounds, should be enough to take him over the finishing line. He is also way ahead in the prestigious Treasurer’s which again is his to lose and when you look at his 34-38 points range over the six events played so far this year you sense it is unlikely his season is going to collapse. Should be a tight struggle between Alan and Richard on the tour.

5. Talking of which the final payment is now due for Kent in September and my thanks to those who so far have paid their balances. For those who haven’t, the figure needed to book your place on this exciting tour to play four outstanding courses is £245. The final briefing will be issued by mid August to the 40 people on the list. Those on last year’s Ayrshire Tour will no doubt have seen with interest that last weekend’s Scottish Open was held at Dundonald Links where we played last September.

6. Since the Charity Event we have been patiently collecting the monies due from the two Auctions and with only a few payments still to come, we can confirm that we have hit a new record of over £30000 this year. This is a terrific achievement and speaks volumes for the generosity of BAGS members and their guests as well as the Committee’s organisation of the event. By the way John Davies has asked me to say that whilst he was happy to participate (unwittingly) in the Disaster Trophy banter over the Charity monies at the Littlehampton dinner, there has categorically been no monies mislaid whatsoever and we fully expect Hedley and Mike C to be able to present a BAGS cheque to the Marsden during the summer bringing the total raised this year to the figure mentioned.

7. The three KOs Competitions have now reached the Quarter Final stages and the deadline for playing these is July 25th. Stuart Horrex and Robin Sewell have already reached the Singles semis so well done to them. Please let John or Roger have the results as soon as the matches are played then they can proceed with the Draws for the next stage.

8. Our next event is at Croham Hurst on August 9 and if you are involved, please pay your balance soon. The OOP will be issued later this week and remember it’s 10 holes in the morning with the main 18 after lunch. In response to a number of requests I shall be bringing a stock of BAGS ties to this event so please e mail me if you wish to reserve one – they are £15 each.

Hope you enjoy the Open this weekend – our Chairman is already at Birkdale for the Practice Rounds, no doubt giving timely advice to participants on how to play the course!
