1. Though the sun shone brightly on us at the last BAGS event of 2017 it came on the back of the coldest night of the year so far as well as some rain before that. Conditions therefore were not ideal in that there was ice on the course and the bunkers were correctly ruled GUR since the sand was too unyielding. Sadly there were a number of falls, the most serious of which was when John Davies slipped on one of the greens when trying to help my guest Mike Margrett who had fallen on the same patch of ice. Though John is now recovering it is likely he will be out of golf for at least a month with damage to his ribs. We wish him well and hope he will be back to golf sooner than that.

2. Despite this the course was praised by many who had not played it before and we were just unlucky to catch it on the morning after such a cold night as it drains much better than its neighbours in the Woking/West Byfleet area. Our Christmas dinner afterwards was of a very high standard and was a great start to the festive season for the turnout of 70+.

3. Despite the conditions Mike Grieshaber who with a blistering back nine notched his second BAGS victory – the other one was at Worplesdon last year – with an excellent 36 points putting him one better than Clive and Kevin who themselves were one ahead of Charlie who brought three of his four sons along to share the occasion. That’s a great finish to the season for Mike whose handicap reduces from 23 to 21. Congratulations also to Robin who won the Past Captains’ title and to Dan Sayers on his par 3 victory both on the day and over the season.

4. So we now know the winners of the three Majors and though there was little doubt that Alan Langford and Richard Hockham (absent In Oz) would retain the Chairman’s and Treasurer’s because of their big leads, there was uncertainty about the Memorial where Alan needed to hit a score of 24 to overhaul Richard. This proved to be two points too many for Alan who therefore relinquished the title he won last year. His consolation is to have retained the Chairman’s and taken his handicap in a 12 month period from 15 to 10. For Richard the story is even better with two Majors, the KO Singles and the Charity victory under his belt – no wonder he was out celebrating Down Under!

5. The other big winner last week was the Charity which benefited from the NP contribution and also the two auction items which raised valuable money for the Marsden. Many thanks to those who took part and to Ian for organising the successful launch of the two lots.

6. We have been able to offer membership to five regular guests who I am sure will be great colleagues in BAGS and I know you will give them a warm welcome from February onwards. They are Luke Kirby, Richard Lister, John Rayner, Gordon Street and Simon Windibank. At the same time we say Au Revoir to Bob Maidlow and Terry Taylor who have resigned their membership and Rod Stafford who has become a Social Member. We look forward to seeing them as and when they can play as guests and thank them for their support of BAGS over the years.

7. With next year in mind I have now received Booking Forms from over half the membership and though all venues are well supported, predictably Hankley Common, Walton Heath and Hindhead are particularly popular. Could I ask those remaining to send in their forms and deposits by December 31st so we can decide how many spaces we have at these events.

8. We send our sympathy and condolences to Roger whose wife Pat passed away early last week after a long illness. I have now been informed that the funeral will be held at Leatherhead Crematorium at 12.30 on Tuesday January 9th . The family have requested no flowers but any donations in Pat’s memory can be made to Dyscover, the Charity founded in 1994 by Gill Jackson, David’s wife which was set up to help stroke victims in their communication difficulties.

9. A reminder that the BAGS Annual Dinner will be held on Jan 19 at Effingham GC. It looks like we will have a good number there and I will be sending out the menu choices just after Christmas at which point payment of £25 pp will be due.

10. We look ahead with keen anticipation to next season and especially our visit to Walton Heath which will mark our 25th anniversary. I have already had confirmation that several past members (including John Hartnett who won the first BAGS event at Wentworth East) will be joining us for dinner and a few others will even be playing on the day so clear your diaries for March 27.

It only remains for me to wish you all a great Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year. Thank you for your support throughout 2017 and I look forward to many more rounds together both on the course and at the 19 th!
