1. We had a lovely autumnal day at West Sussex and some of the views were really splendid. If you want proof of this take a look at Keith’s wonderful photograph as he was waiting to tee off on the par three 6th behind what looks like Simon’s group. This is a hole which Henry Longhurst once described as one of the greatest short holes he had ever seen and it certainly lived up to its billing. When you add on to the delights of the course the fabulous meal we had afterwards – there were apparently no less than 11 different desserts quite apart from the quality of the beef and gammon – you can see why the 70+ players had a great day.

2. I am sure no one enjoyed it more than Kevin Hawkins who probably walked off thinking he had blown it after adding only 12 points on his back 9 to the 21 points achieved on his first 9 holes. His total of 33 points is not normally enough to get you in the top six on a typical BAGS day but on this occasion the course was tough enough and the other scores low enough to bring him home for his fourth BAGS victory and one which follows nicely on from his second place at Guildford. Kevin has had a relatively quiet time since his halcyon year of 2010 when he had two wins and a second place in just four meetings but he is always a consistent performer on his regular BAGS outings and to round off a very successful day he also won the 100 round trophy. Well done Kevin.

3. Just behind him were Richard Hockham with another sparkling round which brings him very close to a 4 handicap and Andy Martin who achieved his third podium place of 2017 and whose first day victory cannot be far ahead. How about NZ Andy?

4. Though Richard will not be at NZ (though he will be in Australia!) he would appear to have the Treasurer’s sewn up as he has a huge lead (in that Competition) of seven points. He also leads in the Memorial by 24 but Alan can catch him if he scores more than 24 at NZ given that Richard will not be able to add to his current score. Should that not happen – and Alan had a poor round at WSx partly I’m sure because he was ill - the way would be open to Mark Longhurst to win the trophy if he gets more than 33 in December. Go for it gents….

5. In the Chairman’s the bookies are no longer taking bets against Mr Langford as his nearest rivals – Lawrie, Steve B and Tim – would need to score in the high 40s to catch him. Should Alan and Richard retain their current positions they would retain the Chairman’s and the Treasurer’s which shows how consistent their golf has become. Indeed Alan was off 15 at the RAC less than a year ago and to have knocked 5 shots of his BAGS h/c in less than a season is a great achievement.

6. While on the subject of handicaps, Ian always reviews these at the end of each season so should anyone feel that their figure should go up due to age, injury or performance, he will look at each case on its merits over the January recess.

7. Some of you have already asked about next year’s events and the Booking Form will be e mailed to members in about two weeks. You will be asked to complete it and pay the appropriate deposits by the end of December so I can give Clubs an indication of our numbers and have all your payments on one spreadsheet. The early return will be especially important in the case of our 25th anniversary event at Walton Heath where special rules for guests will apply, the details to be advised with the Booking Form.

8. While on the subject of next year, if you do not wish to renew your BAGS membership for whatever reason, can I please ask you to let me know as soon as possible. We have a number of people on our waiting list who play frequently as guests and we would like at some point to consider them for membership while still keeping our overall numbers within reasonable limits.

9. Many thanks to those who have already paid for themselves and/or their guests for NZ as it really does help me when I do not have to chase those cheques or direct payments. A reminder that the cost of the day is £70 for members and £80 for guests before any deposits. The OOP for this event will be issued at the beginning of December and we have been allocated three start points so we can get round in the limited available light. It should be a great day on the course with the promise of excellent food once the round is over.

10. Could those who won BAGS trophies last year – those are the ones with the past winners’ names on – please bring them to NZ so that I can get the 2017 winners’ names engraved on them before the AGM meeting at Hankley in February.
