1. Our Charity Day is a great event and long may it continue. For the Committee it is seven months hard work of preparation but when you sit down to dinner with 29 teams knowing that they have had a memorable day’s golf with the added bonus that The Royal Marsden have received much needed income, it all seems worthwhile. The weather was good from the late morning onwards but the earlier rain was only light and didn’t really seem to affect the scores of the early groups who were out in it.

2. As we all know this is the biggest event hosted by BAGS in its golf year and it is only fitting to record our gratitude to those (Committee apart) who help so effectively to put the show on the road. So it’s thanks first of all to Keith Gatford and Steve Secker for putting out the signage at 6.30 am then to starters Tom & Fred on the two tees for making sure all went well as the rounds unfolded. We also appreciate the commitment of David Watling, Janet Sewell, Brian Wynn, Keith (again!) and several BP members (thanks to Treasurer John) for ball spotting, and of course Jim for his stamina in watching 104 tee shots at the 8th fail to get into the hole – 11’3” was the nearest this year. Next it’s thanks to Trish & Cathy for dealing with all the scores on cards so attractively printed by Robin. David Taylor also provided valuable help in conjuring up a BP members’ team at very short notice.

3. In the evening Jon and Ian gave us a wonderful auction, not only slick and amusing but very effective in raising money and Chris & Alan anchored the evening so well we finished just after 9.00. Hedley ran the Progressive in his usual efficient style, Gary organised a brilliant Tenners campaign which almost doubled previous efforts (outstanding in themselves) and Keith and his Marsden team pitched up with over £1000 Raffle Ticket sales. As always we are so grateful for the exceptional generosity of Mike Christieson in his event sponsorship and to the Presley family and Paul Hunt for their valuable donations of attractive accommodation in France, the New Forest and Turkey.

4. As I have not yet had the invoice from BP, it is difficult to be too precise on the fund raising side but I am hopeful that we shall have raised well over £20000 to add to Mike’s £5000. If so this will have taken us through the £400K barrier since we started raising money for The Marsden. If you do still owe money from the evening auctions, please pay it soon then we can finalise our numbers.

5. So let’s get to the results from the golf and the Marsden Trophy was won by Mark Romain with 42 points playing off 11 and the team trophy was won by Jonathan Stevenson’s Burhill members team with a record score at BP of 123 points. That’s great golf by all these guys and our congratulations to them. Leading the way for BAGS was Gary with 38 points just edging out Luke on Countback. Gary is in sparkling form at the moment (and not just with the Tenners!) as his last three BAGS outings have produced positions of 1st at Hever, 2nd at Sand Martins and now this victory. Well done young man.

6. I can’t let this review of the day go by without a huge pat on the back for Captain Chris. His 37 points – including a birdie at the tough 17th – not only got him BAGS 3rd on the day but also helped propel his team The Wurzels to a brilliant 112 points and a very respectable 8th place. This was a great way to celebrate his birthday the day after Charity Day and his own Silver Wedding anniversary this weekend. How clever of you to coincide BAGS 25 th with your own, Chris!

7. All three Majors are currently led by Luke who is having a storming first season with BAGS. He has now been runner up in two events so far and is striking the ball so well that you wouldn’t bet against him notching a victory in the second half of the year. Running him close are Gary and Jon Stevenson ( so no surprise there!)

8. Our next day event is at Chart Hills, that well bunkered course in Kent which features the 200 yd Anaconda running down the 5th. We were supposed to play this on last year’s Kent Tour until bunker work postponed it. Though our numbers are down to the low 40s those involved should enjoy this outing and if you have not already paid for the day, please do so soon.

9. Arrangements for the Cornwall Tour are well advanced and the request for the final payment will go out in early July. I hope to issue a list of the various Lodge allocations in the next two weeks and I am sure you will find the accommodation comfortable and spacious. 30 of the 38 involved will be staying the extra night on the Sunday so I will leave you to make arrangements to car share wherever possible.

10. The KOs seem to be proceeding well but please ensure you play any scheduled match by June 30th at the end of next week.

11. Some great personal news – Sam is now a proud father of new born Laila which means that Mark becomes a grandfather and past member Brian has a second great grandchild. Congratulations all round to the family.

Enjoy the World Cup and let’s hope England have a decent run before the agony of penalties!
