  1. Our 25th season began in fine style at Hankley Common. The weather apart from a little drizzle early on was mild and dry and the course was in amazingly good condition – see Keith’s wonderful web site photograph of the 8th to see what I mean . Thank goodness we didn’t opt for a week later with the met men bombarding us with threats of snow! The food as always at HC was excellent and plentiful and the Clubhouse was a great place to relax in after the golf. It was a shame that due to work on the 9th the par three 9A came in as a replacement but quite a few players pocketed a bonus point or two as it was still treated as the par 4 it replaced.
  2. When new members join BAGS their handicaps are decided on by Ian before their first outing based on how they have performed as guests. There is usually then a settling in period until they get a few official rounds under their belt. Not so this time with John Rayner nor for that matter with Gordon Street who both sprang out of their blocks to score 38 and 36 points respectively. Great performances on their first round as BAGS members and I think the first time new guys have made it on to the podium at the first attempt. Well done to you both but remember that Ian will always have the last laugh as he reduces you each by one! A good start to the new season also from Dan who finished third on 35.
  3. The Captain’s Bowl Strokeplay competition produced the usual tight finish but Andy Martin with an 87 (net 76) did just enough to edge out Mark Longhurst by a shot. Remember that this Competition is open only to those who have won or been runner up in one of the main events in the previous season. Had it not been Dave Christie would have been the winner with a net 73 off his handicap of 8. So the immediate Qualifiers for next year’s Captain’s Bowl will be Andy, John and Chris as Retiring Captain.
  4. The AGM was slick and short and produced the handover of the very successful Lambert/Presley partnership to a new one featuring Chris and Alan Langford. Thanks to all members of the Committee for a great 24th season and enjoy your well earned rest from BAGS Committees, Peter! The playing programme for 2019 was announced and should soon be circulated by e mail before appearing on our excellent web site. .
  5. There was a good start to our Charity Campaign with the Tenners being well supported so our thanks to Gary and Jon for their hard work though it was soon realised that it is not easy to write your name on the new ten pound note. However our two stalwarts have a cunning plan to overcome this problem and no it’s not using the old tenners!
  6. Not long to go now before our 25th anniversary at Walton Heath and the plans for a really great event are now well advanced. Apart from everything else there will be a commemorative programme which amongst other content will list the results of the (first) 223 BAGS golf days. By the way there are two late places available to bring us up to the 80 maximum. If a guest is planned Chris advises me that he will enjoy the evening entertainment more if it is not his first BAGS event.
  7. We are planning to offer a range of BAGS clothing which will feature an embroidered badge marking our anniversary. I will send this design out to you all in the next few day and then it is over to you to order whatever you wish as any brand or garment is available at reasonable prices.
  8. This year’s tour to Cornwall has 40 takers and unless you are on SO the second tranche payment will be requested for payment during March. Most of those going have opted for a Sunday night stay so they can have a relaxed start to that challenging opener at Trevose.
  9. The KOs invitations will soon go out and whether you are an old campaigner in this competition or a new member, you will be most welcome to join in. This is a great way to meet fellow members, especially if this is your first year with BAGS. Watch out for the e mail together with the one detailing the addresses of all members so if yours has changed, please let me know.
  10. Many thanks to all who have entered the £100 fourball Charity Draw. We were even over-subscribed this year and if we can get more courses to accommodate the extra people, we will.
  11. Please make sure your Walton Heath money is paid on time as with so many players there is a lot of extra admin anyway without having to chase individuals. Thanks.
  12. Keep your eye on the weather forecast as March 27 gets nearer. I certainly wouldn’t like to be up there this week but a lot can happen in 30 days. Keep warm and out of the wind over the next few days.
