  1. We had the good fortune at our Hever Castle event to hit a warm, sunny day of the type one rarely gets in April - or looking at today’s weather even in May! – so the 40 plus attendees had a good time on a course which was long with a fair number of water hazards.
  2. Despite this it was felt that a score of 36+ would be necessary to win the trophy but in the end Gary’s 34 points proved sufficient to take the day’s honours. This was Gary’s third BAGS victory but his first for three years so he is rolling back into form just in time to for the busy summer ahead. It was a happy coincidence that his winning round coincided with his Dad’s 100th BAGS outing so family celebrations all round. Well done Gary and thanks also for your efforts on the Tenners campaign for The Marsden, about which more later. Good results also from David Taylor and past Captain Glenn celebrating his 200th BAGS round with his score being enough to retain the 150 round trophy. Congratulations also to Gordon on reaching his 250th round at Hever. That is some achievement when his journey to BAGS venues is so long but he is nearly always there and his company is as pleasurable as ever as I was reminded of yet again when I partnered him at Hever. I couldn’t therefore resist taking a picture of him on the 18th green which I’m glad to say has found its way on to the web site.
  3. Early days yet in our Majors but Glenn and Dan Shaw are setting the pace in the Chairman’s with their best three scores amounting to 103 and 100 respectively. Unsurprisingly they are also near the top of the leaderboard in the Treasurer’s but one poor round can be your undoing in this competition so best to wait and see in this one.
  4. Our next event is at Sand Martins on May 17 when our numbers will be in the mid 40s. If you are down to play and have not yet paid, please do so now. We have played there once before in 2013 so a return to this course of two distinct halves is overdue. We still have some spaces so please let me know if you would like to make a late entry before I issue the OOP.
  5. Getting very close to our big Charity Day now with only six weeks to go. Again if you have not yet paid your balance or are bringing a guest please do so immediately as with 116 potential players, we have plenty to occupy us without chasing for money as well. The programme is coming together and we have some attractive lots on offer in the all important auction. In the fourballs we were able to allocate 23 for £100 each and most of these vouchers were handed out by Hedley at Hever or soon afterwards. Many thanks to these individuals supporting this part of the Charity event. As previously mentioned Gary has done a great job on the Tenners for the Tag watch and over £1000 has already been banked. There is still plenty to do in preparation for this event but we are confident it will be up to the standard of previous years and the recently refurbished Clubhouse at Betchworth Park will provide a very comfortable and attractive location for the social side of the day.
  6. Most of you will be aware of the new Data Protection Act which from May 23 will require those holding information on individuals to contact them asking for their written permission to continue to store this for marketing purposes. While this may seem a long way from BAGS and its membership, the Act does cover organisations such as ours so we are obliged to seek this permission from you in order to continue to send you information about BAGS. This goes to the very heart of BAGS membership since without e mail contact our organisation simply could not operate in the way it does now. In an effort to obtain this permission in the least intrusive and easy to respond method possible, we are working either on a link which you can click to give your approval or a simple reply mechanism to send us a return e mail. It goes without saying that if we do not get this permission, we can no longer contact you in this way and this is bound to have huge implications for your continued BAGS membership so when we do send you this communication, please make sure you reply immediately.
  7. Would all those involved in the Preliminary Rounds of the KOs please note that the deadline for these matches to be played is May 20 th. If you are involved in first round games and your match does not depend on a Preliminary Round result, do make contact now with your opponent so that you can get ahead of the next deadline of July 1 st. With the lighter evenings now with us, it is perfectly possible to start a match as late as 4pm so that obviously is a help to those who have work commitments.
