  • As our 25th season draws to a close it’s fair to say there cannot have been many better BAGS days than the one we had at Hindhead. A winter golf package doesn’t come much more enjoyable than the one we experienced a couple of days ago. The course was in amazing condition with the fairways and greens immaculate even if (as you would expect at this time of the year) the putting surfaces were on the slow side. Even the weather turned out better than predicted as we had some sunshine and the promised wind chill was much less than predicted. Add to that a great breakfast and a lovely carvery served by welcoming and efficient staff and you can see why the 61 players left Hindhead feeling that Christmas had come early.
  • For the first time (we think) in BAGS history there was a four way BAGS tie with 35 points at the top with Countback needed to separate them. Interesting also that the eventual top three were all off a single figure handicap. In the end it was Graham who finished top of the Christmas tree so well done to him on his tenth BAGS victory though it was the first since March 2015. With this result he stretches his lead in the Order of Merit to 12 points over tour room mate Jon who I am sure was the first to congratulate him (!) but let’s also say well done to Keith, Richard and Mark who came so close to outright victory.
  • As it was our last event of 2018 we can now confirm the winners of the Majors and Luke, with a round of 33 at Hindhead kept his lead in both the Chairman’s and Memorial Trophies. This was his first year as a BAGS member and it’s pretty special to notch two Majors in your rookie year so well done Luke and I’m sure there are many more BAGS trophies to come. Nice also that your Dad was there on the day to witness your success. Glenn also made 33 points to keep his hands on the Treasurer’s Trophy with his 6 rounds ranging from 30 to 38 – pretty consistent golf which is the basis of that Competition so well done to our 2007 Captain. Which leads nicely to the result of our Past Captains’ Competition won by Graham.
  • If you are looking for consistency on the par 3s during the season, Dan Sayers is your man. He was the overall winner in 2017 and having qualified at Sand Martins as a par 3 winner this year, he saw off the opposition again with 11 points from the tricky (and sometimes very long) par 3s at Hindhead. Well done sir.
  • The Pairs KO was decided at Puttenham after the RB newsletter was issued and the ever consistent Marshall brothers made it three titles in four years in defeating Mike and Andy by 2 & 1. The KOs have seen some excellent golf played and well done to all taking part on generally keeping to deadlines and of course to organisers John and Roger.
  • Steve Hunt has decided not to renew his BAGS membership and we thank him for his support over the last four years. We also wish him a speedy return to golf after his recent replacement knee op.
  • With Peter Robertson’s and Steve’s resignations, we have been able to offer membership to Tom Longhurst and Lee Davis. Both have proved their commitment to BAGS since they started playing with us as guests and their attendances this season have been especially consistent. We look forward to seeing them as frequently in 2019 and onwards.
  • Many thanks to those who have so promptly returned their Booking Forms for the coming year. It really does help my administration to get the paperwork out of the way before Christmas so please get those diaries out and (preferably) e mail or post your choices to me as soon as you can. We now have over 30 signed up for the West Midlands tour so if you are interested in joining us, I would like an early commitment so the hotel rooms can be finalised. Looking even further ahead our courses selection for 2020 is now nearly complete and these will be announced as part of our AGM at Worplesdon.
  • I hope to send out the menu choice options soon to those who will be joining us for the Annual Dinner at Clandon Regis. We now have numbers in the mid 50s so look forward to seeing you there for a great evening aimed at banishing those January blues.
  • I was sorry to hear of Mike Corliss’ forthcoming operation in early January and I know you will want him to know that all his friends hope for a successful outcome and a swift recovery.

Have a very enjoyable Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year to you all.
