Lead sponsor Andrew McCaffery presents a cheque to Amy Mullins, Head of Community Fundraising for the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity

The prize table ready for action

1. Our Charity Day is tiring, especially for the Committee and their helpers but it is very worth while seeing 116 people enjoy 18 or 27 holes of golf on a course in great condition despite the heavy rain which had fallen in the few days preceding the event. In fact there was even a lot of the wet stuff all round the area on our day but mercifully we managed to avoid all but about three showers which soon passed. The weather though was not what you would expect in summer and the wind got up quite strongly at times so keeping even the leaders below the 40 mark.

2. As we all know this is by far the biggest event hosted by BAGS in its golfing year and it is only fitting to record our gratitude to those (Committee apart) who help so effectively to put the show on the road. So it’s thanks first of all to Keith Gatford and Steve Secker for putting out the signage at 6.30 am and in Steve’s case (as Keith was still playing his Texas) clearing it away 10 hours later then to BP starters Tom & John on the two tees for making sure all went well as the rounds unfolded. We also appreciate the commitment of Brian Wynn and several BP members (thanks to Treasurer John for organising them) for ball spotting, and of course Jim for his stamina in watching 100 tee shots at the 8th fail to get into the hole – under 12” was the nearest this year and try as he might Jim could not will it in, despite the attraction of a £4000 prize. Next it’s thanks to Trish & Janet for dealing with all the scores on cards so attractively printed by Robin.

3. In the evening Jon and Ian gave us a wonderful auction, not only slick and amusing but very effective in raising money and Alan and Mike anchored the evening so well we finished slightly before 9.00. Hedley ran the Progressive in his usual unflappable style (having got the majority of the fourballs donated by participating Clubs), Gary again organised a great Tenners campaign for the Ladies Tag Watch and Chris, Roger and Andy and the Marsden ladies ran up a terrific Raffle total. We are so grateful for the exceptional generosity of Andrew McCaffery in the event sponsorship and to the Presley family and Paul Hunt for their valuable donations of attractive accommodation in France, the New Forest and Turkey. Finally our thanks to all players who gave so generously to the auctions and elsewhere on the day and of course to all BAGS members who have supported us on the way to this event.

4. As there is so much money still to come in, it is difficult to be too precise on the fund raising side but I am hopeful that we shall have raised well over £20000 to add to Andrew’s £2500. Our hope is that we will reach the £25K target which would be sufficient to kick start the purchase of two new Neoprobes which are vital pieces of equipment for use in operating theatres on both Marsden sites. If you do still owe money from the evening auctions, please pay it soon then we can finalise our numbers.

5. So let’s get to the results from the golf and the Romain Individual Trophy was won by guest James Tregear with 39 points playing off 23 while the team trophy was fittingly won by Andrew’s team Atlantic Warriors with a record equalling 123 points. This was a huge 10 points ahead of Barrett’s Allsorts and showed how well our main sponsor’s team played in the difficult conditions. Leading the way for BAGS in the Individual was Lawrie with 36 points so back to back wins for Leftie which does not happen in BAGS very often – Gordon was the last one in 2014 when he won three on the trot. Close behind were Robin, Luke and Jon.

6. After his last two wins it is not surprising that Lawrie maintains his lead in the three Majors though his position in the Memorial, where every round counts, will come under threat as he is not currently booked to play in our next two events. So the chasing pack should make the most of this opportunity at Merrist Wood and Mill Ride.

7. So we go into the second half of the season with our July event being held at Merrist Wood. Our numbers are low by BAGS standards but the 27 hole trophy is up for grabs and I am sure we will have a good day there on July 11. If you are playing can you please make sure you have paid the outstanding balance by June 25.

8. Arrangements for the West Midlands Tour are now well advanced and the request for the final payment will go out in early July. I have the list of the people wanting to travel on the Sunday who therefore will need an extra night at the Tour hotel and will reconfirm their names and amounts owed when I issue the details.

9. The KOs seem to be proceeding well but please ensure you play any scheduled match by June 27 and if you are the winner don’t forget to advise John or Roger of the result.

Hope you are managing to avoid these heavy June showers which seem to be taking over from April!
