  • The day at Cowdray was excellent in all respects. First the weather was perfect and gave us great opportunities to enjoy the wonderful views of the South Downs. Next the course was in great condition as recent rain had brought the moisture which all courses in our area had been lacking in the early spring months. Finally the food, about which there had been some concerns after our last visit, was absolutely superb with even the ‘light’ lunch drawing much approval. The (new) chef then surpassed himself with a magnificent dinner enjoyed by all. So a happy occasion and such a pity the turnout was only 37, very low by BAGS standards.
  • Still you can only beat the ones there on the day and Lawrie Arnold did that in spades with his 40 pointer eclipsing VC Mike and Mark by two points. So let’s hear it for the lefties of this world as Lawrie’s first BAGS win resulted in the first member leading the pack since past Captain Peter Robertson won four years ago swinging the other way round. Lawrie has had a couple of third places since he joined us in 2017 but this time there was no stopping him, even in the afternoon Team Event where he eagled one of the holes to give his team five points. The Alan Winteridge trophy therefore has a new owner, at least for the next year. Well done, sir.
  • With this result the Arnold juggernaut has now moved into the lead in all three majors. When his CP score is added to two 36 points performances at Worplesdon and Hayling, he has a three point margin over previous leader Keith Marshall in the Chairman’s and the gap is 9 points in the Memorial and though no one has yet qualified in the Treasurer’s as the requirement is for five rounds to have been played by the individual, the unofficial rankings put Lawrie ahead of Luke. When your lowest score of four rounds is 33, it is no surprise you are leading the way and Team Captain Gordon Street must be delighted that he has Lawrie in his group in June.
  • As we are now just over three weeks away from Charity Day on June 13, you’ll understand that both Committees (Charity and Main) are focused on final preparations. It is a big task to get all the names and handicaps from the guest teams then there is the no small matter of getting over £10000 in fees for the day from the players. The programme has now been signed off and should be delivered by June 1 at which point it will be posted or delivered to all teams or in the absence of their addresses to the Captains. Look out also for the OOP which should be issued in the next few days. If you are not playing on the day we would like you to help our fund raising by buying some raffle tickets so expect to hear from Andy Skilton who is running the raffle this year. The whole day is a big team effort and we really appreciate the input from our members and of course on the day itself from the guests. The Royal Marsden ladies will also be there on the night helping sales and of course Jon and Ian will raise between 20 and 25% of our likely gross total in about 40 minutes of frenetic auctioneering. And finally a huge thank you to Andrew McCaffery who has generously offered to become our main event sponsor.
  • The Knock Outs are now in full swing with most of the Preliminary round matches played. If you have a first round match to schedule, please note the deadline is June 27 so confirmed arrangements and results please to either John or Roger.
Enjoy the long summer evenings
