1. A good turnout of 50 players was greeted by wonderful weather at Betchworth Park in sharp contrast to the low temperatures and strong winds of the two preceding days. The conditions therefore were ideal for late summer golf and it was just a pity that this could not have been our rearranged Charity Day which was the original intention until Covid linked restrictions meant that our original numbers could not be accommodated in the Clubhouse. As it was Betchworth handled the social distancing aspects extremely well for the food with plastic screens between the tables of four.

2. With twelve BP members playing it was always likely that one of them would lead the field on his home turf and the only surprise was that the winning score of 34 was not higher. However this is not to detract at all from a great performance by David Taylor as the greens were extremely fast and many of the pin positions were unusually demanding. This was David’s fourth BAGS win as he held off challenges from rookie members Matt Hall (33 pts) and Mike Weaver (31). Matt particularly is in sparkling form as he followed up his 3rd at Littlehampton and 4 th on the tour. All prize winners will receive their rewards when they next attend a BAGS day.

3. One of the highlights of the day at Betchworth was a hole in one (his first) on the 15th by Simon Cheung. The contours of the green meant that Simon did not see the ball actually go in the hole but his achievement became evident when a search for the ball on the green proved fruitless. Simon’s ace was the tenth by BAGS members over our 27 year history – there have also been three by non members at the time. This was the second hole in one at Betchworth on a BAGS day, the other memorably being Adam Romain’s on Charity Day in 2008 which won him a car. While Simon’s prize will be less eye catching, we shall be presenting him with a special trophy to mark his feat.

4. Because no Novelty Holes were allowed at Betchworth, at the Zoom prize presentation afterwards we drew out a name from the list of all players and Keith Marshall was the lucky winner. Likewise Captain Mike announced after a hi tech Google selection process that Justin Pollard (Glenn’s guest at Liphook in March) won the Tenners Charity Prize for a round at Worplesdon which raised a magnificent £1020.

5. The tour which in this strangest of years morphed from 4 days in France to three rounds in Hampshire saw 26 players staying over at Sandford Springs and were joined by BAGS visitors on two of the days. The Cup was not decided until the leading group walked off the last green and when all the scores were counted and checked, it was Stuart Horrex who won the Secretary’s Cup having made up a deficit of 9 points on overnight leader Dougie Paull who finished one point behind on 103, level with Tom Langford. Stuart’s score of 38 on the last day was a great performance and a just reward for some very consistent golf.

6. The end of September means that we have concluded our fund raising for 2020 and Hedley will soon be sending a cheque for £17000 to the Royal Marsden which is a tremendous result considering we did not even hold the Charity Event. Thanks to all who have made this possible from generous donors (you know who you are) to those who have supported all our initiatives. Let us hope we are allowed to build on this figure for our campaign next year as all Charities have had a tough 2020.

7. There are now just three events to go until the end of the season, the first being at Burhill in two weeks time. I have issued the list of players for this event but we still have two spare places before we reach our limit of 50 for the venue. Again social distancing will be paramount and masks should be worn in the Clubhouse except when eating or drinking. If you are on the list and have not yet paid for Burhill please do so without delay.

8. Our November date at Hankley was always going to be oversubscribed and at this stage we will only be able to accommodate BAGS members who have confirmed their intentions and a very limited number of guests. I will ask the Club to increase their capacity especially as we are being fed on a rolling basis as groups of four come off the course but I am not confident of success. For Worplesdon in December we can satisfy all current bookings for players and guests.

9. With the relatively low scores at Betchworth, Mark retains his comfortable lead in the Chairman’s. In the Treasurer’s with a minimum requirement of five rounds, no one of course has yet qualified but Richard, Matt and Simon W are the likeliest leaders once the Burhill round has taken place.

10. The KOs have reached the semi final stages and in the Singles Niall and Dougie will battle it out for the chance to take on either Matt or Captain Grieshaber. With both these games arranged for this week, it is a shame that the weather forecast is poor for such high profile matches. The Pairs semi finals are almost an all Betchworth affair, the only exception being our Captain (again) and his VC who will face Richard and Clive. In the other SF Jon and Graham will play Lawrie and Mike W. Finally in the Seniors Dougie takes on Harry for the right to play Andy or Stuart. Some interesting matches there.

Stay well and cheerful.
