Full Results1. The arrangements at Burhill worked well with the rolling 3 course meal afterwards allowing up to 32 socially distanced players to eat while seated four to a large table. The early players left after finishing their food and were replaced by the tail enders which meant that the dining area was never overcrowded. As a pattern for the immediate future – and who knows how long into next year – we now know what works and after enjoying our golf we can at least have some limited social contact with our fellow players.
2. I guess that no one enjoyed his golf more than Tom Longhurst who with his Dad is rapidly building the foundations of a new BAGS golfing dynasty. With 37 points over a long course and at times a strongish wind, Tom amassed 37 points to finish two ahead of Patrick and Captain Mike. This was Tom’s second win in under a year – the first being at New Zealand last November – and balances out nicely Mark’s wins at Camberley Heath in December and Liphook in March. Add to that brother Sam’s victory at Hindhead in 2015 and Grandad Brian’s victory at Tandridge in 2001 to see that golf really does run in the family. Without wishing however to rain on their parade, they still have a bit to make up on the Langfords who have a total of 11 BAGS victories from Alan, Gary and Tom. Well done Tom and your successes have not escaped the eagle eye of Ian who has cut you yet another shot this time to 18.
3. In the fight for the Majors, Mark retained his lead in the Chairman’s (best three rounds) but has seen the ever consistent Matt Hall take over first position in the Memorial which represents the cumulative total of your rounds. The lead however is slender with just two separating him from Mark so it’s all to play for especially as Harry is looking strong at only five points behind our new leader. Matt is also in pole position in the Treasurer’s but as five rounds are needed for qualification, only 14 players have so far qualified so we’ll get a better picture after Hankley when more lose the NQ status.
4. As we have had to cancel three events this year, we thought it would be a good idea to break with tradition and extend the season through to January so that our Captain will have had eight day events under his belt by the time he ‘retires’ and members will be able to play an increased number of qualifying rounds for the Majors. We have therefore booked a day at Farnham on Wednesday January 20 where the limit is 52 players. It will have been 10 years since we played there as our previous outing was in 2011. Our other four visits have all been in the summer but their pricing structure has not allowed us to return since then so we are taking advantage of out of season rates and a dry sandy soil which winters well to return for what will be the final event of our 2020 season. Look out for the separate e mail inviting you to sign up for what should be a fitting climax to a year which has brought many challenges…..
5. We have our first winner in this season’s KOs and it’s congratulations to Dougie Paull who beat Captain Mike in the Singles Final. Not bad for someone in his first season with BAGS and he has an opportunity to do the Double as he takes on Stuart Horrex in the Seniors. Meanwhile in the Pairs Clive and Richard edged out the Captain and VC in a thrilling semi and they will take on the winners of the all Betchworth pairings of Jon and Graham and Lawrie and Mike W.
6. Hankley Common is generally accepted as our most popular course and we plan to make what will be our 12th visit on November 10th. We have been fortunate enough to get 72 places and so far have been able to satisfy all but two of the requests to play. We’ll have two start tees and fortunately have been able to change their original decision for an 8am start to a more civilised 9.00. Again it will be a three course meal afterwards and all we need is some decent November weather to make the perfect setting for a great BAGS outing.
7. There are some date changes for next year starting with our day at North Hants now moved a week earlier from February 23 to 16 as the Club is scheduling course work w/c February 22. Then at the end of 2021 we are now intending to play Hindhead (replaced in December 2020 by Worplesdon) on December 16 and have moved the New Zealand day to November 9. As there is no immediate prospect of having meals (and therefore prize giving) as a group, our intention is to hold Zoom meetings at 7.30 pm on the day after each golf day so the Hankley prize announcements will be held on November 11 with the actual prizes being distributed at the next meeting. Any 2s winnings however will be paid direct into your account.
8. A small reminder on handicaps - for those who fail to reach the buffer
zone on a given day, Ian raises your handicap by 0.2 rather than the more
normal 0.1 so if you don’t want your h/c to rise more rapidly –
and many don’t – you need to advise Ian that you wish to OPT
OUT of this system which was created to help the older members reach a more
realistic figure more quickly. Looking at the changes this month some of
the newer members may wish to revert to a 0.1 increase. It’s your
decision.
[Edit - Ian M] - the 0.2 increase is only applicable if a player is in the bottom third of the field. At Burhill this
worked out at a score of 25 points or less.
Stay safe while enjoying your autumn golf during the shorter days – clocks go back this weekend☹️
