1. Though it’s only five days since our wonderful day at Liphook, it seems light years ago in view of what has happened since but why don’t we dwell on a great BAGS event first before dealing with subsequent developments.

2. Liphook is a class act and one of the best courses in the Home Counties. There had been so much rain throughout February which then spilled (!) over into March though you would scarcely have known it from the state of the course which was in excellent condition. The view over the course downhill from the Clubhouse must be one of the best of any in Hampshire and the heathland aspect made it doubly attractive – less so if you strayed into it (I speak from experience). Then the food after the golf was also excellent with a carvery of the highest quality.

3. While we’re on the subject of quality, take a look at Mark Longhurst’s recent BAGS results. His only sub 30 round last season was 29 at Mill Ride and he ended the year with a 42 pointer in the Camberley Heath deluge. He paused for breath with a mere 33 points at Blackmoor before producing a round of 41 at Liphook to lead the field by two points. Ian has had a field day with his handicap which has probably been cut at a faster rate than anyone in BAGS history – I make the reduction 6.4 in the last year. So Mark is now within a whisker of playing off 20 and who says he can’t get on the podium even at that level? So well done Mark and as he has now retired from Sainsburys, he has even more opportunities to hone his golf skills.

4. And let’s hear it for Luke who surely gets the Montgomery award for the best player (so far) never to have won a BAGS day. Since he became a BAGS member in 2018 he has had two third places and Liphook was his FIFTH runner up place. Great also to see MED 43 up there with the other two with a solid 37 points.

5. We of course now have a new Captain and the high hopes Mike may have had of driving the long par 3 green were not to be, so instead he settled for….the Ladies Tee. Have a good year, Mike and fortunately Ian’s pictures on the web site show only the swing and the pose rather than the outcome!

6. Some late news from last year’s Pairs KOs is that new pairing Chris Presley and Simon edged out previous winners Kevin and Tim on the 18 th in the match delayed from last autumn by Chris’ back problems on the West Midlands tour. In fact this was only his second outing in six months – the other being Liphook - and with this victory he becomes the first BAGS player to have won the Pairs with two different partners – Hedley being the other. There is by the way a high number of entries to the 2020 Competitions and John and Roger will be making the draws this week.

7. The Charity Fund also had a good day at Liphook with over £500 raised, much of it from Mike’s Captain’s Challenge. The news got even better as guest Colin Milton generously donated his £100 prize to the Marsden fund.

8. Now the less good news. We are clearly in a major health crisis which is affecting us all whether we are still working or are retired. An early casualty has been the postponement of the Rock Choir concert planned for the end of March which was a sell out – more great news for our Charity. Hedley is working on a new date, probably towards the end of the year, to be announced soon. It is almost certain we shall also have to postpone our April day at Burhill until late October and we also have a new provisional alternative day for our Betchworth Park Charity Event of Monday September 28 so do note that in your diaries. We are keeping a close watch on developments and hoping the crisis is not as bad as some are suggesting. But do follow the Govt guidelines so that we can beat this virus and get back to our normal way of life as soon as possible.

Stay safe, healthy and cheerful
