Full Results1. Here’s the first newsletter in over five months reporting initially on last Tuesday’s event at Littlehampton and much more besides. Though the second event of Mike’s Captaincy was a long time happening, the new arrangements in the circumstances forced upon us worked very well and we had a surprisingly large attendance of 48 considering that our day’s golf was cut from 27 to 18 holes and that there was no dinner or prizegiving afterwards.
2. Taking full advantage of the relatively benign dry conditions with a headwind only on half the holes, Robin amassed a great score of 41 points which brought him one point clear of three players – Matt, Lawrie and Graham. In fact he was only spared the Countback by the computer correcting a Stableford miscalculation on his card which gave him a total of 40 points. This was Robin’s sixth day victory, a total exceeded by only five other players and his first for eight years. Well done Robin and I’m sure the thrill of getting your hands on the mid-summer trophy was not marred by your one shot cut ahead of the Tour.
3. As social distancing regulations prevented us from holding the prizegiving in the Clubhouse, we switched this to Zoom 24 hours later and were delighted 22 members tuned in. We’ll make sure all relevant prizes are delivered or handed over as soon as is practical.
4. In the Chairman’s, now that the three round qualification level has been reached, Mark has a handy seven point lead over Simon W. If he hangs on to that he will follow in the footsteps of son Tom who won this major last year.
5. The KOs are running smoothly and all are at the Quarter Final stage with two Pairs already having reached the semis those results now guaranteeing new winners of that particular trophy.
6. Though there have been no BAGS golf days for five months, we did manage to organise (thanks to the technical skills of Ian) a highly successful on line Charity auction which raised in excess of a much needed £15000 for The Marsden. Thank you so much for the generous bids during that week and it was really exciting taking part in a Zoom call with other members of the Committee watching the final bids coming in just before 9pm, the last one coming in for the West Midlands lot from Richard Hockham just 18 seconds before the deadline. Since then it got even better as Andrew has generously added a personal donation of £1000 to our total and made available a Worplesdon fourball valued at over £500 at summer prices which we intend now to use as a prize in the Tenners draw. I will be writing to you all separately on this initiative which has already realised £350 and we hope will achieve even more before the Charity deadline of the end of September.
7. That date brings me nicely to a mention of our next day event at Betchworth Park on Monday 28 September. As you may recall this replaces the Charity event which should have been held in June and is now to be a conventional (if that word applies to anything this year) day event. I shall again be writing to you separately about this to encourage you to take part and in addition to the pre round bacon roll, unlike Littlehampton we shall be offering a rolling one course meal in the Clubhouse after your round. Watch out for the on line sign up sheet in the next few days.
8. A few of you asked about our plans for the rest of this year and until recently it has been difficult to make too many as Clubs have varied in their response to the resumption of golf with some yet to open their course even to individual visitors unless they are guests of a member. West Byfleet falls into this category so our early October day has sadly been cancelled. We have however replaced this with a visit (postponed from April) to Burhill – now scheduled for Wednesday October 14 - and I am delighted that because they have a number of available dining rooms, we have been offered two which are contiguous and will allow not only 56 players to have a socially distanced meal but give Mike and Andy the chance to present the prizes in full sight of both sets of diners so that will be almost like the old days! Again watch out for the sign up communication by mid week.
9. Beyond that at this stage we cannot promise anything firm but will be talking soon to Hankley and Hindhead to assess the chances of having more than just a ‘golf and go’ visit. In some respects BAGS’ proposed numbers are a handicap at these venues as like all Clubs in the new normal they have severe dining room capacity restrictions. We will do what we can to get the best outcome for you all.
10. Even before Betchworth Park we have the tour in early September which was originally to be based in Le Touquet but with great foresight (as it turned out) was converted a while back into a three day Hampshire version based at Sandford Springs which was to have been the venue for our 27 hole Competition in July. We have 26 members and two guests taking part and look forward to an enjoyable three rounds of golf, the last of which will take us to nearby Weybrook Park, close to Basingstoke. This is now a very compact tour (apart from the social distancing!) taking only a little over 48 hours and with not much travel, the ideal combination for these difficult days.
11. Stay well and healthy and enjoy your summer golf in safety.
