1. Our Banstead Downs event took place on an extremely hot day when the temperature in the shade reached over 30C. Unfortunately golf is only played in the shade when you are off the fairway in the trees and though some of us need no encouragement to achieve that, it is not conducive to making a decent Stableford score. So full marks then to all 34 players who saw out the day in these conditions and especially to those who played in the 27 hole competition. I am sure we were all a bit lighter at the end of the round(s) but that was soon adjusted by a couple of drinks in the Club’s shaded garden followed by an excellent meal afterwards in the air conditioned dining room.

2. It is almost a rite of passage in this annual 27 holes competition that whoever is leading at lunch after the morning 18 does not go on to win the whole day – Tom Langford being a notable exception in 2019. However 2021 saw a return to this pattern and the morning leaders – Ian Marshall and Dougie Paull – after excellent morning rounds of 37 points, saw John Hawley play an afternoon round of great quality (as well as showing his stamina in the heat) when he scored a further 19 points to add to his not too shabby morning total of 36. Long time BAGS member John has had three thirds and one runner up position over the years but has never been in the gold medal position so it is especially good to see him up there in the winner’s enclosure. Well done John on a great score of 55 in that heat as you finished two points clear of the field and good to see some of the other higher handicappers also performing well, most notably David Jackson.

3. It was great to have the meal together at the end of the day and to hear the usual BAGS banter from the various tables. The extra bonus was the prize winners being able to take their booty away rather than receive it at the next event. Hopefully that is the pattern for the future as the number of Covid infections continue to decrease.

4. I am afraid that the usual commentator’s curse worked again with Matt at Banstead. Having praised his consistency over the first three events of the season, he failed – shock, horror – to reach 30 for only the second time since he became a BAGS member and his handsome lead in the Chairman’s is now cut to 2. The man coming up on the rails is Peter Barkham who had another good round to take his best three scores to 104 and as his worst score of the three is 29 he may be poised to leap ahead if he has a decent round at Ham Manor.

5. So that is our next event in August and we have good numbers out for what is traditionally a holiday month, though perhaps not in this very unusual year. We will also be holding our Stick Competition in the afternoon on this day so if any of the 18 holers want to enter this they will need to play in the morning and of course advise me of their decision. Please note that the money is now due - £65 if you’ve paid the deposit are are entering the 18 + Stick and £55 for the 18 hole men as advised this morning.

6. Very soon after HM is the tour to Lincs and the balance for this is due by the month end. Thanks to the majority who have already complied with this request and if you are not one of these, please make sure you pay this week as we have to pay a hefty proportion of hotel and green fees in advance, such is the size of our group. If you are one of the 44 players, expect to see dinner menus by mid August for you to make your food choices and these will be closely followed by the OOPs for the first three days.

7. Also in September this year is the Charity event and added to our admin burden this year is the new handicap format based on the difficulty of the course. Betchworth Park is judged to be difficult – I agree! – and results in an adjustment upwards of all guest handicaps. Typically for a 20 plus player this is 2 or even three shots. Because on this occasion BAGS members are competing against guest players/teams it would be wrong not to apply the same adjustment so unusually we intend to do just that in order to keep the playing field as level as possible. Ian will be writing to you all to explain further the rationale behind this decision and how we will implement it so you are not disadvantaged.

8. We do still need help on Charity Day from those who are not playing and raffle prizes would also also be much appreciated. This is a team effort and BAGS is very much on show on the day so please supplement our efforts in whatever way you can. Offers of help please to VC Kevin.

9. The knock outs are proceeding well and in most cases have reached the Quarter final stage. If you are still involved please watch the web site to keep up with the next round’s matches though I know John will be writing to you individually.

10. I think we have virtually completed the return of all perpetual trophies from 2019 when they were not played for in 2020. Thanks to all those who have cooperated so well in rectifying this situation as we are keen to keep up with the history of BAGS and ensure there are no unavoidable gaps.

Stay safe, enjoy the summer and I look forward to seeing you in West Sussex, Lincolnshire and Surrey!
