Betchworth Park (BP) Thurs 30th September 2021

1. It’s been a very busy September with our two big events of the Lincs Tour and the Marsden Charity Day both being held in the same month as a result of the latter’ s postponement from its normal date in June. It was therefore with some trepidation that as the September weather changed from unseasonably warm to cool and wet, we faced the possibility of 116 players getting soaked, with inevitable impact on our fund raising. We need not have worried as apart from the odd light shower the weather held up pretty well and our dinner was highly successful both in the social and money raising aspects.

2. It’s always good to see a new name at the top of the leader board so well done to Tim on a great round of 38 which was a very good score in conditions which were not easy. In fact he was only one point behind the overall winner Mark Smitherman from Woodcote Park. Tim has been on the podium seven times in his BAGS career and this was a great time finally to hit the top spot. Second was Richard Hockham whose new handicap of 3.8 is now equal to the lowest ever reached in BAGS and Luke was just a point behind on 36. Luke’s consistency is amazing as in just 24 rounds with us he has been 2nd or 3rd nine times and has scored under 30 on only three occasions. Congratulations to the three of you on solid performances against a high quality field of guests.

3. Talking of guests one of the most outstanding performances BAGS has ever seen came from Martyn Thomson who was until recently Head Pro at Parkstone GC in Bournemouth, coaching Georgia Hall amongst many others. In our event he played off +4 which required Robin to amend his spreadsheets formulae, these having been previously been written on the basis of handicaps higher than 0. You can see how well Martyn is still playing when his score was 36 points off this plus figure.

4. In the team event, Reigate Blues scored 120 points to take the prestigious Marsden Trophy at their sixth attempt. Ian Barrett’s team was only 4 points behind so taking Runners Up position for the second time in a row.

5. In our fund raising the Progressive Auction raised a record £5260 from fewer courses than previously offered. It has been a difficult year for Hedley to attract 4 balls as Clubs have been very protective of their tee slots after the Covid linked increase in members and we are very grateful to him for his efforts in this area as well as leading our Charity Committee. Jon and Ian put on their usual brilliant show in coaxing over £6000 (final figure to be confirmed) out of the assembled audience using humour and persistence to shift all the lots, even in the end 20 jars of honey. Thanks also to Andy and Kevin for anchoring the evening so effectively and for getting us to the end of a long day bang on time. Stuart H (beforehand) and Mark (on the night) made a very effective pairing in the valuable Tenners draw which raised over £1000. Though at this stage we of course don’t have final figures, it is certain we will have reached our initial target of £18000 and I am expecting we will be over the £20K mark when all the bills and receipts are in. One of the most pleasing aspects of our Charity Event is the number of guests who say how professional the whole event is from the scorecards (thanks Robin), the programme (past Captain John Moody), the spotters (Janet, Liz, Linda, David and the ever patient members of Betchworth), the hole in one invigilator (past Captain Jim Cattermole) right through to the course condition and the quality of the food at the Club. Truly a marvellous line up and result, most generously topped up by a magnificent donation from Andrew McCaffery.

6. So to the Lincs tour which enjoyed fantastic weather and great courses. A record 41 people attended and took on (amongst others) the stiff test of Woodhall Spa’s Hotchkin (slope rating 149 – 7th most difficult in Europe) while enjoying excellent food and accommodation at the Petwood Hotel, famous for its Dambusters links. Lawrie played some great golf with two day wins, his biggest problem appearing to be which of his four rounds of 38/36/35/35 to cast off – not a difficult decision that most

of us have! Tom Langford was only two points behind and Richard Hockham finished third. On a personal note while we were so sorry Harry had to withdraw at the last minute due to a trapped nerve – a condition which also prevented him leading his team at the Charity event – it was wonderful to see Gordon again after his serious illness and being strong and determined enough to play three out of the four rounds.

7. In the KOs we have our first winner as Andy Harper beat Stuart Horrex in the Seniors. In the Singles Captain Andy earned a place in the Final against Richard Hockham and in the Pairs Lawrie and Mike will play Richard and Clive in a repeat of last year’s match.

8. Nothing new to report in the Majors though now we have Qualifiers in the Treasurer’s Matt is threatening to repeat his success of last year. He will however have to continue his form through the remaining three events as Keith is close behind.

9. Just three months of 2021 remain and in that time we have the prospect of three great courses in our programme starting with Woking in just ten days time. Let’s hope for lovely autumnal conditions.
