Full Results1. It was great to be back to our BAGS golf after a 6 months gap and the wonderful sunshine made it all even better. Though the only pre booked food was the bacon rolls, the lovely weather gave us a chance to sit out with a drink and a sandwich afterwards and many took full advantage of that. There was even a chipping competition late on when several in our group showed an uncanny ability to find the bunker rather than the 18th green!
2. Surrey National is a difficult course to play with its slopes and gradients and at 6355 yds off the yellows plus only three par 3s there are some mighty long par 4s. The course is very scenic with some great views along the valley. The day started with Captain Andy’s drive in which was well attended despite the comparatively small field (for BAGS) of 36. This shot was despatched efficiently down the middle and a purple patch then followed before the enormity of being a BAGS Captain sank in! Meanwhile in the same group his VC Kevin was helping himself to two Novelty Prizes out of the four on offer so no nerves there either.
3. But it was left to someone in the last group of all to hit the really high spots as Peter Barkham bounced back from a 10 year drought to hit a stunning 39 points. This was Peter’s fourth success – two of them at Effingham – and follows a review of handicaps by Ian during the close season when he adjusted upwards the figures of players who had been consistently logging disappointingly low scores. Peter took full advantage of this and Ian has rewarded his success with a 2 shot reduction in his playing figure.
4. Good to see Lee Davis with an excellent round which was only one point behind Peter and so got his first podium place since he joined BAGS in 2019. Lee has a long journey for each event from deepest Hampshire and we are very grateful for his commitment to our Society. Geoff Roy also had a good round with his 36 points putting him in third place. He also managed a 2 and coincidentally two of his playing partners were also amongst the six getting birdie twos on the day. Simon was one of them and came very close to getting a hole in one which would have been quite something following his ace at Betchworth in September.
5. If all goes well with the virus numbers, we shall be back to a more conventional BAGS day in May when we are fortunate enough to have timed our booking to coincide with the planned reintroduction of meals inside Clubhouses. So at Westerham on May 17 we’ll have a 27 hole day and if all goes to plan a dinner followed by a real prize presentation – remember those? If you would like to add your name to the 40 already playing, do contact me soon.
6. Then in June we have the opportunity to play the RAC Old course in the summer which should be a real treat, recognised by a large increase in bookings by over 60 people. Because this was a late replacement booking for our now postponed Charity event, no pre booked catering is possible at the Club but you will be able to buy food on the day and sit in the lovely grounds after your round. Because of the higher attendance we plan to hold the delayed Captain’s Bowl Competition at this event to give last year’s winners every chance to play for this prestigious trophy.
7. The Charity event which will now take place on September 30 is being well supported by members and guests and Hedley and his Committee are now hard at work planning all the extra activities to be held on that day. Though we did well last year in raising £17000 despite not holding the event, thanks to an online auction and other initiatives, our hope is to raise the bar further to make over £20000 but amongst other help we need hole sponsors so if any of you can offer a contact who would be prepared to pay £100 to sponsor a hole, please contact Hedley or myself. Andy is also planning his Captain’s Challenge which will be revealed in early June.
8. The Knock Outs draws were made by John and Roger at Surrey National and have now been issued. The time limits sound generous but it’s always best to make early contact with your opponents so any absences on holidays (if you are brave enough to plan any) can be factored in.
9. Arrangements for the tour continue to go well with 44 players right up to date with their stage payments so thanks for your help on this important issue.
10. I’ve been working with Kevin on courses for his year as Captain though progress has been slower than normal as Clubs have been reviewing their relationships with Golf Societies given a surge in new members during lockdown. We have though nearly completed the bookings and these of course will be issued when finalised. I can confirm though that Kevin’s drive in will be at Farnham in March and later in the year we’ll be offering the chance to play at West Sussex, West Surrey and Worplesdon.
Hope you are enjoying your return to golf in the unusually good weather. We need rain at some point of course but hopefully overnight!
