1. Despite all the Covid obstacles in our way and potential weather difficulties in mid winter, we managed to hold our Christmas event at Worplesdon in pretty decent weather (despite a few holes of light drizzle) on a superb course with excellent food afterwards. The advice to take a LFT test before attending resulted in people being more relaxed about socialising and the general view was that the event was a highly successful end to a strange old year in which despite all the difficulties we managed to hold eight day events, a four day tour to Lincolnshire and a later than usual Charity Day when over £20000 was raised.

2. High scores are unusual at this time of year so all credit to Sam Longhurst who managed to make 38 points to give him his second BAGS win. This victory came on the back of a recovery from a serious cruciate ligaments condition which kept him out of all sport for a year leading up to the operation in November 2020 and for most of the time since then. So well done Sam and your timing was perfect for a Christmas event as you were in a family fourball with past member Brian, Mark and Tom.

3. Good also to see Chris Presley running Sam close with 37 pts and so winning the past Captains’ Trophy and Andy Spreadborough making his first podium appearance. The other trophy played for on the day was the par 3 Competition open to each of those who had won this year’s day events on the short holes. The winner at the RAC event in June was David Watling who has now resigned from BAGS so as runner up I was parachuted in and to my and no doubt everybody else’s amazement, my score of 9 points on the 5 par threes was enough to gain my first win – modest though it was – for over 8 years!.

4. The far more substantial wins involved the Majors and here it was Peter Barkham doing the double as he held on to his slender lead in the Chairman’s and overhauled the absent Matt in the Memorial. Sadly Matt had a minor op a week or so before Worplesdon and could not take part as he would have been a strong contender in the Chairman’s and an almost certain winner in the Memorial so far ahead was he. Still full marks go to Peter on his successes achieved over the season of nine counting events. In the Treasurer’s it was Luke who kept his lead despite also not playing at Worplesdon though Richard Hockham would almost certainly have won this had he qualified by playing one more round to reach the minimum of 5 rounds. Luke now adds this Trophy to the Chairman’s and Memorial he won in 2018. Well done to all these winners whose engraved trophies will be presented at our AGM in February at North Hants.

5. While on the subject of future events could I please urge you to return your Booking Forms and deposits by the year end at the latest. My thanks to the 50% of members who have so far booked the courses they want to play and as some are inevitably filling up fast as we are limited in numbers by new Club Covid restrictions, I recommend you deal with this soon to help yourselves and also of course to assist me in making the appropriate bookings at Clubs. We have organised 11 venues and a tour next year so hopefully many of these will appeal.

6. We have not got much of a break in our golf schedule this winter as unusually we have a January event taking the place of the Annual Dinner which we are not running this year due to Covid. Our choice of Farnham was deliberate as being on sand it should drain well and we are hoping for decent golf weather which we have historically enjoyed in our winter events.

7. With the departures of Steve Little and David Watling this year, we have been able to offer BAGS membership to Steve Lang and James Bennett and I am delighted to welcome them to our Society effective January 1st. The regulars will have seen them both playing as guests of Andy Martin and Simon Windibank. Steve was on the Lincs tour where I know he made many friends and James is one of the more consistent guests with only one of his BAGS rounds being under 30. I look forward to seeing them often during the 2022 season. Membership is also being offered to one more person who if he accepts will bring our numbers to 66.

8. With the AGM in February we are planning future office holders and have invited Mark Longhurst to be our Vice Captain during Kevin’s year of office. This will mean of course that Mark will be Captain in 2023 which will be BAGS 30th year so Mark’s drive in will start a new decade for us. I am already working with him on the courses and tour location for his year of office and will have more news on these at the AGM.

9. It has been a tough year for all but especially Gordon and Harry. Gordon missed all our events up to the tour as he was having ongoing treatment and Harry has been unable to play since August due to a hand injury. Both of them are normally regular attendees and we missed their cheery presence as much as I know they missed playing with BAGS. As they wait for scan results in the New Year we wish them both all the very best and hope to see them soon as regular players.

10. I wish you and your families a wonderful Christmas and a very happy and above all healthy New Year. Let us hope that the current virus issues soon subside so we can quickly get back to a normal life.
