Bookham Amateur Golf Society was formed in 1993 and has been going from strength to strength ever since. The membership is now capped at around 60 players and there is a healthy waiting list of people wishing to join, many of whom play as guests on a regular basis.
The dedicated committee and particularly the detailed planning of the secretary, Terry Hulme, mean that events are planned up to two years in advance. With day events typically attracting 50 players or more it has been possible to secure places at some of the most prestigious courses in Surrey and the surrounding areas.
Firm favourites with the members include Hankley Common, St Georges Hill, Burhill, Hindhead, and West Hill. Members originally came from the Bookham and Dorking areas of Surrey but over time people have joined from all over Southern England. To reflect this there are usually one or two events each year that are slightly further afield, such as Littlehampton and Westerham.
The annual tour takes place in September each year, usually taking in four rounds of golf. The tour gives members an opportunity to visit areas and play courses that they may not visit otherwise, either a modest distance from home such as the South Downs or The New Forest, or in some years more adventurous locations including Ireland, France and Spain.
